After only a few days since the Regional Development Agency Bačka implemented the first online workshop within the project New approaches for seismic improvement and renovation of Adriatic and Ionian historic urban centers – ADRISEISMIC, which was intended for members of the professional public in our country, a series of devastating earthquakes struck the region.

The earthquakes hit the neighboring Republic of Croatia, and the most devastating of them was of the 6.4-magnitude with the epicenter near the town of Petrinja (Sisak-Moslavina County). This earthquake, which occurred on 29 December 2020, caused a great human tragedy and caused enormous material damage. As a result of this earthquake, there were damages, and in some cases total demolition, of residential buildings, schools, hospitals, churches, business facilities…

The quake was also felt in neighboring countries, and according to official statistics, this is the second strongest earthquake that hit our region and the strongest ever in Croatia since modern measurements were made. Stronger than this earthquake when it comes to the region, is only the one that hit Montenegro in 1979, which was felt throughout the Balkans. This earthquake, recorded 42 years ago, was of 6.9-magnitude.

In this regard, two experts in earthquake engineering engaged in the above-mentioned ADRISEISMIC project, Dr. Svetlana Brzev and Dr. Marko Marinković, together with their colleagues from the Serbian Association for Earthquake Engineering (SUZI/SAEE), provided their support by participating in the writing of the preliminary report on the impact of the earthquake that occurred in Croatia on 29 December 2020. In this action, in addition to our experts, and under the leadership of Prof. Eduardo Miranda from Stanford University (USA), experts from Croatia, USA and Switzerland also participated. All those interested can view this Report via the following link:
